DEATH 14 JUN 1864 • West Maitland, New South Wales, Australia

 

William was the first of my Ancestors with the Russell name to Arrive in Australia William and his wife Sarah were my 4th Great Grand Parents  

 

William was born in Somerset England in 1797. He married Sarah Lavis on the 25 Dec 1821 • St Cuthberts Church, Wells, Somerset, England.

William and Sarah arrived in Australia on the 4th September 1849 on the Ship “Victoria” William was 51yrs old and a gardener and Sarah 44yrs and house servant at the time of arrival

William Russell 1822–1864 who was 26yrs old and married to Ann nee Loxton 1828-1877 Ann was 21 years old

Joseph Russell 1825 -1883 who was 24yrs old and married to Elizabeth nee George 26yrs year old.

 William and his Death and Burial and Headstone Mystery 



William Russell 1797- 1864 was buried at Oakhampton Cemetery in June 1864, which is recorded on his death certificate although his headstone and details on the internet show he is buried at Pioneer Hill Cemetery Raymond Terrace his headstone was moved there sometime after his wife’s Sarah’s death in 1878.  His body is still somewhere at Oakhampton Cemetery. 





Oakhampton is a Wesleyan denomination cemetery set on the banks of the Hunter River. The Oakhampton Cemetery operated between 1849 and 1894. Because the cemetery was set on the banks of the Hunter River flooding was a problem which eroded areas of the cemetery.

Williams Son

Williams Son William 1822-1864  my 3rd Great Grand parent is also buried at Oakhampton Cemetery having died in the same year as his father 30th Nov 1864 and buried at Oakhampton 2nd Dec 1864. His death is also recorded on his death certificate at Oakhampton in the same year as his father.

  Finding Joseph Wright, His father, My Grandfather   After finding Joseph Wright and the location where he is buried and visiting Fawkner Memorial Park near Melbourne in June 2023. The search continued to find out who was Josephs Mother and Father after lots of research the Tuck side of the family. I knew through DNA that Charles Tuck 1850-1942 and his Wife Ellen Mary Tuck nee Hill 1860-1936, that it was highly possible they were my Great Grandparents.     My attention turned to finding the link between Joseph and the Tucks. As Joseph was adopted at a time when records of adoption didn’t need to or weren’t kept this had some challenges within itself.   So, the research continued to work through the Tuck family and who would be the link to Joseph. Working through the family and possibilities it come down to 2 of Charles and Ellens sons, Leslie Joseph Tuck, and Charles Fredrick Tuck. Now Leslie Joseph Tuck 1901-1981 had 2 children Elizabeth (Betty) Tuck and William (Bill) Tuck.
